In October 2023, the Volta River Authority initiated a controlled release of water from the Akosombo Dam, to prevent overtopping. This action has resulted in flooding in low-lying areas along the Volta River, affecting communities such as Mepe, Battor, Sogakope, Mafi, Adidome, and others. The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) in Ghana reported that the flooding displaced over 26,000 individuals, leading to significant losses of homes, possessions, and livelihoods.
Golden Exotic Limited (GEL), a large exporter of fresh bananas to the European Union, reported that the flood, induced by the spillage from the Akosombo Dam, has caused damages to its farms exceeding €1.8 million. The floods have damaged crops, machinery, and infrastructure near the Volta River basin. GEL, which holds a 90 percent market share of fresh banana exports from Ghana to the EU, highlighted the extensive damage to their banana plantations, irrigation systems, and infrastructure, necessitating substantial reinvestment.
