Moldova takes up to a quarter of EU’s plum imports in 2023

The European Union sources a substantial share of its plum imports from the Republic of Moldova. In fact, in 2023, Moldovan plums constituted 25% of the EU's plum market. This data was highlighted by Deputy Prime Minister Dumitru Alaiba, the Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization, in a report by MOLDPRES.

Deputy Prime Minister Alaiba noted that, over the course of 2023, Moldova's plum exports reached a value of 35 million euros, directly benefiting the nation's agricultural producers.

The EU, two years prior, had removed import quotas on a selection of seven agricultural commodities from Moldova, plums included.

Deputy Prime Minister Alaiba proudly stated: "Our industrious entrepreneurs cultivated, processed, and exported 60,000 tons of plums – quadrupling the previous quota of 15,000 tons that was abolished two years ago. We've not only surpassed our goals by four times, but also have potential for further growth. This accomplishment is a testament to the diligent efforts of our citizens and underscores the international demand for high-quality Moldovan produce. Our goal is to foster an economy where entrepreneurs have open market access and opportunities to compete globally. Our daily efforts are geared towards achieving reforms, securing financing, and penetrating new markets. Indeed, there's much more we can achieve."

Statistical evidence positions the EU as the Republic of Moldova's foremost trading ally.
