Taiwan's Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) has heightened scrutiny over muskmelon imports from Japan after a recent consignment was found to contain excessive levels of the pesticide Nitenpyram. The implicated batch, imported by CHIAN HER FRUIT Co., Ltd., exhibited 0.04 ppm of Nitenpyram, surpassing the permissible non-detectable threshold.
Consequently, all future shipments from the importer will undergo rigorous batch-by-batch evaluations. This decision follows the detection of excessive pesticide residues in three out of 268 muskmelon consignments from Japan over the last six months. The TFDA has escalated inspection rates for these imports to 20-50 percent as of December 25, 2023, a measure set to continue until June 24.
Now, 18 kilograms of muskmelons exceeding pesticide residue limits were seized at the border, with mandates for their destruction or repatriation. This enforcement action also encompassed other food items.
