Since the inception of official durian exports from Vietnam in September 2022, China has rejected 30 shipments of the fruit, citing cadmium contamination. This figure represents a mere 0.01% of the total durian exports to China during this timeframe, as stated by Nguyen Quang Hieu, the head of the international cooperation and communication division at the plant protection department.
However, despite the small percentage, this issue has been marked as a significant warning to durian producers in Vietnam. The exact source of the cadmium contamination, potentially stemming from soil, water, or emissions from nearby factories, remains unidentified. The plant protection department is actively investigating the cause and has advised producers to enhance their control over farming inputs and practices. Additionally, they have been urged to conduct thorough cadmium level checks prior to export. The Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association acknowledged the seriousness of China's recent warnings on cadmium contamination in Vietnamese durian, highlighting the need for immediate attention to this matter.
