Kenya, a large avocado producer in Africa, is aiming to strengthen cooperation with China to meet the stringent food safety standards required for the Chinese market. This initiative was highlighted by Muthomi Ernest, CEO of the Avocado Society of Kenya, during the 4th International Africa Avocado Congress in Nairobi. The society is focused on improving fumigation and cooling processes in Kenya through partnerships with Chinese stakeholders, aiming to increase the competitiveness of Kenyan avocados in China.
The congress, attracting over 100 participants including avocado growers, exporters, and stakeholders from various regions, emphasizes the potential for growth in the avocado trade between Kenya and China. Erick Nyansimora, from Keitt Exporters, highlighted the importance of adhering to Chinese fumigation standards to enhance the quality of exports.
With China's growing consumer demand for healthy foods, there is a significant opportunity for Kenyan exporters. Cooperation between Kenyan agricultural agencies and their Chinese counterparts is deemed crucial for meeting safety standards and increasing profits for Kenyan farmers. Despite the European Union being Kenya's largest avocado export market, China represents a substantial untapped market, with companies like Kakuzi planning to significantly increase their exports to China.
