For the fourth consecutive year, Biesheuvel Knoflook has fresh garlic available from Italy. "For us, Italian garlic serves as a wonderful bridge to the Dutch season that kicks off again in mid-June," says Thijs Boersma. The Italian garlic is available in two size grades, 50+ mm and 60+ mm. Biesheuvel sells the Italian garlic to Dutch, Belgian, and German retail chains as well as to Dutch wholesalers and exporters.
The Dutch garlic season traditionally runs from June to January. Afterward, the garlic specialist from Slootdorp switches to garlic from South Africa and Egypt, respectively. "From mid-April, the quality of the garlic from Egypt starts to decline. For this reason, we have found a nice alternative with Italian garlic. We have now established a good relationship with our grower, who supplies the garlic exclusively to us."
"Italian garlic is somewhat less known in the market than, for example, Spanish garlic, but we are very satisfied with its quality. The harvest in Italy has been good this year. Moreover, Italian garlic came onto the market earlier than Spain, where the water shortage is becoming increasingly acute," Thijs explains. Biesheuvel receives the Italian garlic in EPS crates and packs the garlic themselves in cardboard boxes or another packaging as desired.
The Dutch season is also already on the horizon. "We expect to be able to harvest the first early varieties on our plot in Brabant in about three to four weeks, after which we will continue the season with our plots in the northern tip of North Holland. Despite the struggle to get the plants properly in the ground due to the wet autumn, the garlic is looking reasonably good. We do not expect a bumper yield next year," Thijs concludes.
