Lyrebird Capital Company Limited (LCCL) has been denied the acquisition of 400,000 hectares in Nanga-Eboko, Central Region, for industrial cassava production. The decision was communicated through a confidential letter from the Minister of Domains, Cadastre, and Land Affairs, Henri Eyébé Ayissi, indicating a directive from the presidency to halt the process. The letter, dated April 29, 2024, references high-level instructions that led to the retraction of a previously granted special waiver for LCCL. This development follows public dissent and warnings from local figures about the project's implications on land usage and social peace in the region. The government's stance appears to be in response to concerns over potential public unrest and opposition from environmental NGOs.
"Based on the information from the letter dated April 5, 2024, from the Minister of State and Secretary-General of the Presidency, I inform you that following high-level instructions, the terms of my correspondence from December 12, 2023, granting you a special waiver for a provisional concession on approximately 400,000 hectares in Nanga-Eboko have been retracted," Eyébé Ayissi wrote.
