Manipur is facing a potential crisis in vegetable production following a severe hailstorm. The storm caused extensive damage to vegetables in Bishnupur district, a key vegetable-producing area in the region. The hailstorm and thunderstorm also damaged hundreds of houses in the district.
Farmers in the district, who are major producers of seasonal vegetables and fruits such as watermelon, cucumber, brinjal, bottle gourd, pumpkin, and green chili, were significantly affected, with their crops completely destroyed. Additionally, seasonal fruits like mangoes were also heavily damaged. In the Phumlou area of Bishnupur, approximately 60 farmers, including those displaced and currently living in relief camps, had cultivated seasonal vegetables on around 30 hectares of paddy field, all of which were destroyed by the hailstorm.
