Fruit sector supports the '40 Hours Law' in Chile

In a recent statement from Chile Fruits, Ivan Marambio, the organization's president, discussed the Labor Directorate's opinion on the implementation of the "40 Hours Law," specifically addressing the rejection of proposals to extend snack hours or distribute the reduction of working hours throughout the week. Marambio emphasized the sector's support for the law, highlighting its potential benefits for workers, while expressing concerns over the directorate's rulings, which he believes could complicate its application.

Marambio pointed out that the agricultural sector values the law's intent, but is troubled by the lack of clarity and consideration for the industry's unique operational dynamics, such as seasonal peaks. He stressed the importance of ensuring that any adjustments to working hours are straightforward and beneficial to both employers and employees, advocating for agreements that facilitate a full reduction in a single day to maximize worker benefits. Concerns were raised about the practical challenges of implementing the law, especially in relation to shift work, and the uncertainty surrounding existing agreements between companies and unions.
