Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics' (ESL) initiative, Cool Port Addis, is set to be launched this Ethiopian year, targeting the enhancement of storage and transportation for Ethiopian fruits and vegetables. The project, designed to facilitate increased exports and foreign currency earnings, will incorporate specialized refrigeration containers to maintain the quality of perishables during storage and transit.
Despite facing initial delays due to funding constraints and a lack of technical expertise, ESL has recently made significant progress, securing a USD 25 million financial agreement from the Dutch government, with the Ethiopian government matching this contribution. The initial phase requires an investment of USD 27.5 million, with Invest International and the Ethiopian government providing financial support. The project, expected to attract Dutch firms with expertise in cooling logistics and horticulture, was confirmed for launch by Mehreteab Teklu, CEO of Ports and Terminals at ESL. Additionally, a fuel storage depot at Mojo Dry Port, costing over Birr 47 million, is set to inaugurate, promising to enhance cargo services in the region.
