Avocado ripeness checker debated by Australians

For Australian avocado enthusiasts, discerning the ripeness of Hass or Shephard varieties remains a challenge prior to purchase. The introduction of an avocado ripeness checker in a Zurich supermarket has sparked global debate on whether this technology is the solution to determining fruit ripeness or if traditional methods suffice.

Celestine Tan demonstrated the device at a Migros Supermarket, where, after a brief interaction, the screen indicated the avocado was "ripe and soft". This device, developed by OneThird, a company founded by Dutch entrepreneur Marco Snikkers, aims at minimizing food waste through innovative technologies.

Revealed initially at a technology exhibition in the US in early 2023, the technology is gradually being adopted in supermarkets worldwide, including the Netherlands, Singapore, and Belgium. The device employs optical sensing and AI to assess ripeness, providing users with immediate feedback on the avocado's condition.
