Ad Pollux, Eurofresh:

"Unrest in Düsseldorf and Cologne results in an increased influx of German customers to Venlo"

While Labor Day on May 1st is still widely celebrated as a national holiday in Germany, many customers managed to find their way to cash&carry wholesaler Eurofresh at Fresh Park Venlo this morning. "You can see customers coming in to shop in their Sunday best, bringing their wives and children along for once," says Ad Pollux. The Eurofresh director also does not expect the German clientele to decrease. "At the wholesale markets in Düsseldorf and Cologne, there is quite a bit going on."

The wholesaler, which celebrated its 25th anniversary earlier this year, has delved into Dutch strawberries for the first time this year. "That was a product that never received much attention, but thanks to a collaboration with one of the growers from this region, it has been picked up. And it's going very well. This grower cultivates the Inspire variety, a sweet-tasting strawberry from Dutch soil. The demand was so great that we had to look for another grower," Ad explains.

Dutch and Belgian greenhouse vegetables always make up a large part of Eurofresh's turnover. "Pepper prices are good at the moment, tomatoes were a bit lower in price today. Cucumber prices are recovering from a low point, but fortunately for the growers, that market is now starting to climb," Ad continues. "Also, lettuce varieties were extremely cheap for a long time, but especially the colorful varieties have now also increased in price."

The demand for asparagus is also picking up at the moment. "For us, this is not a major product, but it is a nice one. Most customers have their own farmers where they get the asparagus, but we have a number of growers who bring in their produce daily," says the director of Eurofresh. "Furthermore, the cauliflower market is remarkable. The prices are extremely high, but they are almost impossible to get."
