President Irfaan Ali has unveiled plans to enhance food production in Bonasika, Guyana, including the establishment of a processing facility in the Essequibo Islands-West Demerara District. The announcement was made during a visit to the agricultural community, highlighting the current production of approximately 240,000 pounds of ginger per year and addressing the challenges faced by the community, such as insufficient storage and processing capabilities.
The President emphasized the government's commitment to supporting the agricultural sector, stating, "We are going to build in this area a processing facility, so we can take the fresh ginger, dry it and crush it so we can extend the storage time from weeks to months and access higher valued market with the matter." The initiative aims to encourage local farmers to develop an integrated production system that encompasses all islands in the vicinity, facilitating increased production and centralized processing.
Furthermore, the community's agricultural output includes about 50 tons of banana, over 200,000 tons of pumpkin, and more than 120 tons of provisions, such as cassava, projected for 2024. These developments are part of the government's broader strategy to bolster the agricultural industry in Bonasika and beyond.
