Watermelon prices remain high in Bangladesh despite ample supply

In Bangladesh, specifically in the districts of Chandpur, Rajshahi, Narail, and Khulna, watermelon, a popular fruit during Ramadan, continues to command high prices despite a plentiful supply. In Chandpur, the cost of watermelons has seen an increase compared to the previous year, with prices ranging based on size; a large watermelon is priced at Tk700, while standard, medium, and small sizes are selling for Tk450 to Tk500, Tk400 to Tk450, and Tk250 to Tk300 respectively.

Significant quantities of watermelons are transported daily to Chandpur from various districts including Bhola, Charfashion, Barguna, Suborno Char, Patuakhali, and other areas in Barishal. According to a day laborer: "Every day 10/15 trawlers, each carrying 10,000 to 15,000 pieces of watermelons, come to the river jetty from Bhola, Barishal, Barguna, Patuakhali, etc." Despite this abundant supply, the price reduction has not been observed.
